Wearable drone detectors

In short

A wearable drone detector is a small body-worn RF sensor that alerts its wearer by vibration or sound when it picks up a drone's radio signal nearby. Ideal for close protection, patrol and event security – with shorter range and less precision than a fixed system.

How it works

Same principle as larger RF sensors: it monitors typical drone control and video bands and alerts on signal strength or pattern. Some devices indicate direction or a strengthening signal; others can identify protocols. Many connect to a phone app or a control room, so several units together form a simple sensor network.

When it's the right choice

  • A close protection team moving with the principal
  • Foot or vehicle patrols
  • Event security staff spread across a site
  • Temporary sites with no time or permission for installation

Limitations

  • Smaller antenna and sensitivity – shorter range
  • Usually not suitable for precise geolocation
  • General RF limits: drones in radio silence go unnoticed
  • More false alerts in crowded radio environments

What to check before buying

  • Frequency coverage – including FPV bands, not just 2.4 and 5.8 GHz → Frequencies
  • Battery life – a full shift or event day?
  • Alert modes – vibration, sound, display, discreet mode
  • Connectivity – app, central logging
  • Updatability – new protocols, firmware updates
  • False alarm handling – adjustable sensitivity, whitelisting
