Fixed, portable or wearable? Comparing form factors
Updated:
In short
Fixed systems suit permanent sites, vehicle-mounted or portable units suit mobile tasks, and wearable detectors suit close protection. In most real situations, a combination works best.
| Fixed | Vehicle-mounted | Portable / handheld | Wearable | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical use | permanent facility | patrol, convoy, mobile site | event, temporary site, targeted authority action | close protection, patrol |
| Coverage | large, continuous | medium, moving | local, temporary | around the wearer |
| Set-up | weeks | minutes | minutes | instant |
| Integration | full | partial | limited | via app |
| Cost | highest | medium–high | medium | lowest |
| Operator | control room | vehicle crew | 1–2 people | the wearer |
How to choose
- What must be protected, and for how long? A permanent site and a three-day festival need very different solutions.
- Does the protected asset move? If the principal or convoy moves, a fixed system won't help.
- Who operates it? The best device is useless without a trained, attentive person behind it.
- Is integration needed? At a permanent site, yes; at a temporary site, simplicity matters more.
Hybrid setups
A common and effective approach: fixed detection at the site, wearable detectors for patrols, a portable unit for events and special days – all feeding one common operating picture. System integration
