What is counter-drone (C-UAS)?

Updated:

In short

Counter-drone, or C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems), covers the equipment and procedures used to detect, track, identify and – where legally permitted – neutralise unwanted drones. "Drone protection" is broader still: it includes prevention and the organisational side.

The four steps

  1. Detect – is there a drone in the airspace?
  2. Track – where is it, where is it heading, how fast?
  3. Identify – what drone, is it authorised, is it a threat, where is the pilot?
  4. Mitigate – stop the drone's flight or task.

Most private operators can lawfully go as far as step three; step four is for authorised authorities. A good system performs the first three so quickly and accurately that there is time left for the fourth – or for alerting the authorities.

How systems are classified

By user

  • Civil / public use – events, facilities, security companies: mostly detection and identification
  • Law enforcement – police, prison service: detection and mitigation
  • Military – full spectrum, including kinetic effectors

By threat

  • Single drone – almost always the case in civilian settings
  • Swarm – multiple coordinated drones, requiring different capabilities → Single drone vs. swarm

By form factor

  • Fixed, vehicle-mounted, portable / handheld, wearable → Comparison

By function

Why there is no single "best device"

Every sensor has a blind spot: RF can't see drones in radio silence, radar struggles to separate birds, cameras can't see through fog, acoustics can't hear through noise. In practice we design layered, complementary solutions – based on the site, the risk and the budget.
