Detector or jammer? What a security company should buy
Updated:
In short
A detector. A security company cannot lawfully use a jammer, and buying and using the "anti-drone guns" offered on online marketplaces carries serious legal and liability risk. Drone detection, on the other hand, is lawful and sells well as a service.
Why not a jammer?
Legal. Jamming is reserved for state bodies authorised by law and is not among security guards' powers. Legal framework
Collateral effects. A jammer doesn't only disable the drone: it can disrupt surrounding Wi-Fi, mobile networks and satellite navigation – including your client's own systems or an emergency call.
Liability. If jamming makes a drone fall onto a crowd or a car, the damage and the liability belong to whoever used the jammer.
Effectiveness. A jammer doesn't solve everything: it has no effect on drones in radio silence or controlled by fibre optic, and the drone's reaction is unpredictable. How jamming works
What a detector gives you
- Time – every second between the drone appearing and action counts
- Information – type, position, often the pilot's location
- Evidence – logged data for proceedings
- Service value – the client sees the airspace is watched too
How to choose
- Which scenarios: permanent site, close protection, events? → Form factors compared
- Which bands does it cover? → Frequencies
- Does it show the pilot's location?
- How does it handle false alarms?
- Can it connect to your control room?
- What's the real range in your environment? → Range in reality
A service model that works
- Assessment and a drone risk report for the client
- Detection: fixed, portable or wearable
- Response procedure and alert chain, agreed with the police
- Monthly report: detections, incidents, recommendations
When the client wants it "taken down"
A common request. The honest answer: we do what can lawfully be done, as well as it can be done – detect early, identify, document and alert the authorities. That also protects the client from a much bigger risk.
